Wow! What a start to the year! We opened our 2nd cafe, had some world first coffees, made some amazing food and fried our first sourdough doughnuts!
In case you missed it, our new Ellon cafe is open! We took the 'coming soon' signs down on the Sunday evening, didn't tell a soul, and quietly opened the doors to the world at 8am on Monday the 21st of January! After a relatively gentle first day finding our feet we had to find 5th gear pretty quickly! We can't thank everyone who has come to see us enough! The welcome has been incredible! It has been amazing to see so many new faces and introduce people to the Coffee Apothecary!
It's not all been about Ellon though! While we opened our Ellon cafe we shut our Udny cafe for a few days to give it its annual lick of paint and deep clean. It came roaring back into life that same week and has been rocking out some cracking food and coffee ever since. On the coffee front we had an incredible Ethiopian coffee on that, due to a change in Ethiopian law, was the first time a coffee from a single farm has left the country without being mixed in with lots of coffee from other farms. It was amazing to taste a coffee from one farm and one varietal with incredible notes of peach and jasmine coming through on filter and straight up sweet peach juice as espresso!
At present a honey processed coffee from El Salvador has just hit the bar that tastes of maple syrup, kiwi and milk chocolate! That sits alongside a coffee from Costa Rica with delights from Brazil and Colombia on their way!
In Ellon sitting alongside our seasonal house blend espresso blend, Cobblestone, we have a tiny bit of a muscovado and apple tasting coffee from Rwanda and incredibly fruity naturally processed Costa Rican. These are very soon to be changing to a blueberry and strawberry like natural Ethiopian and a honey processed toffee and mandarin like Costa Rican. Loads to looks forward to and taste!
One thing not to miss is the return of the white hot chocolate with lavender, lemon grass and vanilla bean in Udny. There were tears when we found out that the chocolatier who makes our hot chocolate decided to stop making it but these have turned to tears of joy as we have managed to wangle another few kgs of this gold dust out of them! It is only on in Udny and won't be around for that long so make sure you don't miss it!
Both cafe's kitchens are rocking some mouth watering food. The menus at both places will always be different with different delights to tuck into. The return of a few Udny classics on the menu in Ellon has been causing a bit of a stir! The return of the cinnamon rolls on the breakfast menu, dahl and goulash on the lunch menu have had some of you rejoicing. Look out for some exciting new things coming out of both kitchens as our seasonal menu moves towards Spring.
One thing that is keeping us drooling at the moment is the doughnuts, made fresh daily, from the Ellon kitchen. The smell is just heavenly as the fresh sourdough doughnuts come out each day to oohhs and ahhhs. Each day new fillings and glazes are being tried out so make sure you grab one while they are there as each day once they are gone, they are gone!
Udny open daily 9am - 4pm. Ellon open daily 8am - 5pm.
